There are 11 players on a soccer team in a full field or professional soccer match, The players on a team consist of a goalkeeper and ten outfield players. Off the field players are a mix of defensive and attacking players. A match will be played between two teams with a total of 22 players on the field.
Each team has three players on the field and no goalie. Having a total of 5 players on each team is ideal. U8 boys and girls will play 5 v 5. The ideal team size is 7 or 8 players, up to a maximum of 10. U9 and U10 teams play 7 v 7, team size is ideally 10 to 12, with a maximum of 14.

You’ll notice that the number of players in a formation only adds up to 10. That’s because the formations only relate to field players and exclude the goalie. Typically, these field players are broken out into three key zones, with the formation being set up from back to front (defense to midfield to forward).

Simply put, the numbering system relates position on the field to numbers. In a 4-3-3, pictured in this post, the right outside back is called a “2” and the defensive midfielder is referred to a “6”. A soccer number most people have heard of, called a "10", is the playmaking attacker compared to the more target attacker, which is a “9”.
